Thanks a lot! I’ll look into it. As for B&W, Delta 3200 would certainly be a safe bet, and it’s not that bad price-wise, but pushing HP5 (and Tri-X, thanks!) sounds like it’s worth trying too. As for colour, I might consider pushing Ultramax but I’ll keep in mind what you say. Unfortunately, all the native ISO800 films are too expensive for me to use more often than once in a blue moon, but as it happens, I’ve recently discovered here in Poland a “homemade Cinestill” making project, so I’ll probably try out their film as well.

As it happens, I have one more question regarding pushing film! Do you have any recommendations on the cheapest options to shoot something in ISO800/1600? I assume the cheapest option would be to push some ISO400 emulsion, but I’m wondering what would yield the best results. When it comes to colour, Ultramax looks somewhat promising? In B&W, I suppose that HP5 seems like the safest bet.

I’m currently shooting a roll of NC500 and I’ve found some labs nearby that do ECN-2, so I’ll consider trying it out myself. I haven’t yet decided though if I want the washed out look or the more saturated look for this roll, I guess we’ll see what kind of scenes I have a chance to shoot on this one.

I’ve found a blog post showing some photos shot on NC500, but developed in ECN-2 chemistry: phillipreeve.net/blog/anal… The results show much more saturation than with C-41 development (and I’ve been told this is not a result of digital postprocessing), the colours still have pleasantly quaint tones though. It looks like it’s something worth trying with this film, and maybe also with stuff like Lomochrome Metropolis? What do you think?

Do you think/know that the new Color ‘92 emulsion is intended to replace the original one? Or will they be available side-by-side?

Now, I haven’t yet seen any comparisons, so maybe the warmer tone of the new one is just a kinda marketing gimmick, but I feel like we already have a ton of film stocks that are supposed to yield warmer tones, while the possibility of preserving more gloomy ambiances are overlooked, which is a bit of a shame IMO.

Hi Dmitri, first of all thanks for your blog! I’ve decided to get back into film photography after trying it a few years ago and I’ve found your guides and articles incredibly informative and helpful in brushing up on my rusty photography knowledge.

Regarding this post, I love the muted look of the “pulled” photos here, and especially the next-to-last one — the foliage looks incredibly pale, which is great! Is it mostly due to the filter chosen, or does the “pulling” also contribute to that significantly? I assume that using an ortho film would create a much less pronounced effect, is that right?
