Mom, Papa and son are about to go for a picnic by the sea. Unfortunately, they find their car with a flat tire at the parking lot. There is no spare. No tools to repair. It’s Sunday, which means that all the shops are likely to be closed throughout the city.

There is an island on the west coast of Ireland. I have never set foot on it. And yet it remains my favourite place in the world. I work as a seabird ecologist and because of this I get to spend a lot of time island-hopping around the Irish coastline in search of seabirds.

Emigration is a mix of fear, excitement, waiting, tears, and an accelerated exchange of goods. In 1999 my family sold all of their possessions and flew across the Atlantic to Toronto. Since then I’ve lost a significant amount of my Russian identity and gained a prodigious dose of Canadiana.

On the Waterfront
Photographing Noyo Harbor, California

Situated along the Mendocino coast about 170 miles north of San Francisco, Noyo Harbor is one of the last remaining working harbors in Northern California. The locals told me not much has changed over the years. The picturesque fishing harbor looks like something straight out of a classic movie set with its rustic buildings, colorful fishing boats, and vintage signage.

Soi Dogs
Of Chiang Mai

Half domesticated and half feral, these mutts can be found sauntering narrow alleyways or napping on patches of shady concrete. Their joints are bald and shiny from habitually sitting on hard surfaces. Their coats are matt, sometimes mangy, and always covered by a layer of dust.

In solitude, I am still. The harmony of life wills me into reflection, mindfulness, creativity. The warm embrace of being alone frees the thoughts to follow no patterns defined by peers. Solitude is my refuge from despair and anxiety. Stubborn, dark feelings fade with the buzz of communal life, easing their grip on my meandering mind.

The brew started forming weeks before any chemicals touched the film. Amanda, the model, came down with a virus the day of the shoot. I was a new mother, sleep deprived and sincerely delirious. It was right after the election, everything felt fucked up.

In the summer of 2017, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition that was connected to the one word nobody ever wants to hear: cancer. Following many scans and blood work, a splenectomy, a bone marrow biopsy, and chemotherapy, a year later, and my lymphoma is in remission.

My earliest childhood memories are from the Moscow apartment where my mom worked on giant oil paintings as a graduate project for her school. A lot has changed since, and in many ways, neither she nor I are the same persons anymore. Still, the feelings of wonder, being surrounded by the craft that my mom was proud of, take over as I recall the details.

Tropical Fruits
And Their Secrets

I saw my first pineapple bloom under a shade behind a temple in Chiang Dao. Along with its fruiting spiny brothers, it was firmly attached to a thick shoot, stretching upwards three feet from the ground. Having discovered its alluring and unexpected origins sparked an infatuation with finding and photographing the unique, often unknown moments in the life of tropical fruits.

It’s always warm. The sun is out daily, even in the wet season, and there’s very little wind, except for a few minutes just before the rain. Then, the palm trees and the tall grass underneath bend slightly from soft gusts of air. The dust whirls up from asphalt roads, smudged with dry, red clay.

I woke up early next morning in Chumphon to see the sunrise at the beach. In the murky-pre-dawn, I met a man just outside of my hotel. We started chatting; he told me that he rode a bicycle from the north of Thailand.

Riding Steel Along Northern Thai Roads
July 16, 2018
After twenty minutes of washing, soaping, and wiping, the bike is ready again to be enveloped by the highway dust. During the past year-and-a-half it took me to Lao and Myanmar borders, Pai, Chiang Dao, Buatong Waterfalls, Suthep mountain, and all over Chiang Mai.
