Use Your Flash

Flash photography I think is misunderstood, too many are confined to the perceived limitations of its use. I think flash can just be as important in making an image as focal length, aperture, shutter speed, or even framing itself. There’s no need to feel confined to its intended purpose; keeping ISO low, adding light in dark situations.

Raincouver

I liked how the edge of the curtain and the pole framed the woman. Her brightly-coloured umbrella contrasts well in the mostly dark blue background. Since it rains a lot Vancouver, hence “Raincouver,” it is common to see the city shrouded by dark clouds giving it a dark blue or grey atmosphere.

Back in the day, when I shot the original Kodak Ektachrome, it felt special. It wasn’t an “everyday” stock; I took more time with my photography when it was loaded in the camera. Other than the cost, its bold colors, sharpness, and fine grain placed it apart from other film.

Situated along the Mendocino coast about 170 miles north of San Francisco, Noyo Harbor is one of the last remaining working harbors in Northern California. The locals told me not much has changed over the years. The picturesque fishing harbor looks like something straight out of a classic movie set with its rustic buildings, colorful fishing boats, and vintage signage.
